Several years later the script came across Ayres’ desk and he jumped at the prospect of bringing to life Ashford’s tale of a young ex-con trying to go straight who is pulled back into the world of crime by his dangerous former cellmate.Īyres says that when he started working on the script with Ashford it was a more conventional crime thriller rooted in the nightclub bombing that resulted in the death of 15 people.Īyres, however, is more interested in character and contradiction than in plot-driven thrills so he boosted the intensity of the relationship between the younger man Sparra (played by Alex Russell) and his one-time prison buddy Pommie (Sullivan Stapleton). That love drew him to Blake Ashford’s Cut Snake, a crime thriller inspired by the 1973 bombing of the Brisbane nightclub Whiskey Au Go Go that he first encountered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2002.Īshford’s unproduced screenplay won a competition where the prize was a reading directed by Ayres. “Cinema is a purer experience which is why I still love films,” explains Ayres.
